Eat San Francisco: Tres Tequila Lounge and Kitchen

IMG_2190

I headed to Tres thinking it was a new spot, because I’m a schmuck. It’s been there for years, and I’ve been there many times, but they recently changed their name from Tres Agaves to Tres Tequila Lounge and Kitchen, it did not occur to me that it could possibly be the same place. In the same spot. Anyway.

Tres is down on the soma side of the ballpark, an area that is a little bit of a food desert, as far as good restaurants go. It’s warehouse big, as most places near the park have to be, with a huge party room in the back and an open kitchen looking out over a large dining room, along with a bar (with loads of tequila, of course) in the front.

It’s a great place to go sit at the bar, nibble, and watch sports. There are lots of share plate options on the menu, and while margaritas aren’t crazy cheap ($9.50 for the house marg), you can get Mexican beers for around $5 a piece.

We started with the Tres Salsa Y Chips, a huge basket of fresh chips with three house made salsas…a steal at only $4. I’m partial to both the tomato and the tomatillo, but if you are into chipotle (which I am not) that guy on the end has some earthy smoky flavor going on.

We threw in an order of queso fundido (a must, always) and tacos el pastor.

While the idea of all that hot, melty cheese is awesome in and of itself, this particular queso fundido has all sorts of goodies hidden inside. Chorizo, corn (for a little poppy crunch), peppers, onions…it’s really a grab-bag full of fabulous. The entire bottom surface of the cheese is basically burnt to the dish, and, come on, what is better than browned/slightly burned cheese? Nothing. That’s what.

The el pastor isn’t anything to write home about. There are certainly a lot better pastors in San Francisco, to be sure, but $9.50 for three is not a bad deal at all, and it’s a perfectly serviceable version.
